Science is a core subject or KLA at Malware High School. All students from years 7-10 study Science and complete the School Certificate at the end of year 10. In senior years, years 11-12 students are offered Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agriculture as HSC subjects. Students are also offered Agriculture in junior and senior years. A mini-elective (100-hour course) Forensic Science, Astronomy and Medical Science is also offered in years 9 and 10.
As Science and Agriculture involves the study of the world and everything in it, we have an emphasis on "doing Science" by students who are often involved in practical and outside/agricultural environment activities.
Year 7 and 8 Science
The Science faculty offers a coursework designed to enhance and enrich scientific learning of young minds. Throughout the course students design and perform various first-hand investigations. We conduct the Education Perfect Science Championships which allows the students to compare their understanding and skills with students from various schools around the state. Students in Year 8 also complete the NSW Year 8 Science Valid Exam which is a mandatory exam. In both the Education Perfect Championships and Valid exam, students achieve above state average results. We aim at encouraging students to develop critical thinking skills and apply their knowledge to get a better understanding of the world.
Year 9 and 10 Science
The stage 5 course is designed to provide the necessary background and skills to enable students to become scientifically literate in order to make responsible decisions. All students are encouraged to complete and independent Science project or Depth Study to prepare for stage 6. Students in Year 9 and 10 also are encouraged to complete Education Perfect Science Championships which allows the students to compare their understanding and skills with students from various schools around the state.
Year 10 Students also complete the NSW Year 10 Science Valid Exam which is an optional NSW Department of Education academic exam. In both the Education Perfect Championships and Valid exam, students achieve above state average results.
Agriculture
The Agricultural facility has a 17-hectare site that has been specifically designed to cater for student experiences in traditional and non-traditional agricultural areas.
These include sheep, cattle, poultry and alpacas, pasture crops, berries, herbs, fruit trees and ago forestry.
The facility is connected to the Field Studies Centre, giving the school a 32-hectare site at its disposal.
Wetland Facility Study Area
Located adjacent to the main school site is a Field Studies Area for use by our school's students, as well as other schools.
The Centre contains a range of learning experiences centred around the environment. The Centre includes a wetlands area, endangered and threatened native animal and plant communities, water monitoring activities an area of dryland salinity, weather monitoring and an archaeological site. This provides an additional and enriching resource for students to have hands on learning for NSW educational outcomes.
