Welfare

The Welfare and Learning Centre

At Mulwaree students may access The Welfare and Learning Centre that is situated near the Deputy Principals offices. The Centre is a regional resource and can be accessed by the schools partner primary schools as well as other government high schools in the area. The Welfare and Learning Centre is staffed primarily by Miss Michelle Giles who is the schools Head Teacher Welfare.

Students can be referred to the centre in a number of ways.

Students returning from suspension attend the centre before rejoining their regular classes. During this time students are supported while they complete class work or assignments so that they can re-enter their classrooms up to date with their classmates. These students will also complete a variety of positive behaviour tutorials to help them identify and plan strategies to avoid further suspension from school.

Students with poor attendance at school are also catered for in the Welfare and Learning Centre and may spend part of their school day getting help with tasks they are finding difficult to complete alone. Staff are available to help with research, reading, printing and general problem solving to ensure students achieve to their ability.

Adjacent to the Welfare and Learning Centre is a Time Out Space that may be used by students who have been issued with a time out card. These students generally will work with Miss Giles to determine why the time out was necessary and develop communication skills so that they may in the future resolve problems facing them in class and become more confident in their ability to solve problems as they arise.

The Welfare and Learning centre/Time out Space may also be accessed by students who are having difficulties due to recent family or personal events (loss of a family member etc.) While we are not counsellors we can help students to navigate the school day with a little more support than usually required. Students and parents may seek assistance as necessary. The staff are there to offer support and comfort, sometimes a quiet place to sit or relax or to have a talk to sort things out.

The students at Mulwaree High are also supported in classroom settings by

SLSO's   Student Learning Support Officers, and

 SLST's  Student Learning Support Teachers

These staff members work in classrooms to support teachers and students.
